A bit of history

Also known as: the church where San Riccardo Pampuri is kept and venerated. The current church was built around 1620 to replace a previous one, which had been demolished because it was in decline. What remains of the ancient church demolished by the friars is the majestic century bell tower. XV, with conical spire. 40, 50 m high, it is the most beautiful in the surrounding area and is the symbol of the town, clearly visible even from those traveling along the motorway. In 1897 the provost Merli endowed it with a concert of eight bells. The spire is not the original one, which fell on 6 August 1668 due to lightning, which penetrated the church while vespers were being sung and killed a young man, named Giuseppe Vai. The lightning struck the spire again on the night between on 11 and 12 July 1745 and shattered it. The very extensive parish of Trivolzio, which included Torre d'Isola, Trivolzio, Santa Sofia, San Varese, Moirano, Torradello, Cerro and other localities, was ceded by the Archpriest in 1556 to the Fathers of the Franciscan Third Order, coming from the church of Pavia of San Gervasio. They remained there until 1793, when they were expelled by the Emperor of Austria Joseph II. The priests of the diocesan clergy returned to officiate in the parish. In addition to the parish church, the parish had eleven other oratories and churches where Mass was celebrated every Sunday and the Holy Sacraments were administered: in Trovo, Torrino, in Soncino, in Cerro, in Torradello, in Pissarello, in San Varese, in Cascina Grande, the Casotti di Torre d'Isola, the Boschetto and Torre d'Isola. The Franciscan Fathers have left profound traces of their presence in Trivolzio. First of all, the construction of the new church around 1620. The previous one, which was dilapidated, was demolished and the new one was built with three naves, a large presbytery and a spacious choir, useful for the friars. The style of the courtyard also reflects Franciscan simplicity. The church was equipped with precious furnishings. The marble altars and the balustrade of the main altar were designed by Lorenzo Cassani, a famous architect from Pavia. The expenses were certainly paid by the various Confraternities: the Company of the Codone or of the Franciscan Third Order, the Company of the SS. Sacrament, that of the Blessed Virgin Immaculate, carried by the Franciscans, that of the Madonna del Suffragio. They owned property in inherited land and competed in decorating their own chapels. Among the private benefactors, we remember the Branduardi, the Abbiati, the Rusca, the Pignacca. Even when the diocesan clergy took over from the friars, the church was continually embellished. Provost Merli (1896-1916) had a beautiful mottled terracotta floor built, 75 cm above the old one. The chapel of San Giuseppe, in front of the baptistery, was built by the provost Gandolfi in place of an ossuary. In the presbytery you can admire Migliavacca's paintings: the Evangelists at the top, San Siro in the middle, two episodes concerning the Saints Francis of Assisi, patron saint of Trivolzio, and the two evangelical episodes of the prodigal son and Jesus among the children. The chapel on the left side of the presbytery was renovated to accommodate the sacred relics of San Riccardo Pampuri in 1981, which the provost Gandolfi wanted to move from the cemetery to the parish church in 1951 and which since 1997 have appeared to the public in a modern glass case invoice. The face of the Saint is recognizable by a mask that reproduces his features. The Parish Church, in Baroque style, has three naves; the apse is quite large, capable of a large choir; The presbytery containing the superb high altar is also large. There are four spacious arches supported by as many orders of pillars. In the lower naves, to the first arches near the presbytery, two chapels equipped with a small dome were added, intended to give the building the shape of the Latin cross. Regarding the date of construction of the Church, there is, in the parish registers, the report written by the same regular parish priest Fra` Teodoro Molosso who states that he "restored and renovated, rebuilding it from the foundations, the old, extremely unsafe Church, and built the current one honor of God Optimus Maximus, of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of the patron saints Cornelius and Cyprian". In the new Church there were six altars in addition to the main one and they retained the same title as those of the demolished Church.
